Day 1
Arrived in Kuala Lumpur very early, waited to get a taxi until the price went down (higher before a certain time). Went to my friend’s apartment, outside the city, took a nap then just walked around the area and got my first taste of delicious, cheap Malaysian food.
Day 2: Tanah Rata
Caught a bus to the Cameron Highlands in the afternoon (3 hours). Stayed in Tanah Rata and walked around the town. Kinda touristy but kind of nice, very small area and you can walk everywhere.
Day 3: Cameron Highlands
- Brinchang
- Boh Tea Plantation
- Jalan Alor Night Food Court
Caught a taxi to Brinchang and hiked the the Jungle Trail #1. Quite muddy, but fun hike to some great views. Walked down to the Boh Tea Plantation and really liked walking the grounds. Hitch-hiked back to town and took the bus back to KL to stay downtown. Went to Jalan Alor, which is the best place to get food. We got a TON to eat, so good and cheap. The place was very busy even around midnight.
Day 4: Kuala Lumpur
- Pavilion
- Petronas Twin Towers
- Sri Maha Mariamman Temple
Next day we spent in KL shopping (Pavilion is a huge mall), went to the Petronas Towers but didn’t go up. Cooler to look at from the outside. Went to the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple – very colorful. Got a lot of different street food throughout the day, and then caught a train to the airport in the late evening for my flight home.
Kuala Lumpur wasn’t a place I’d ever thought I’d go, but since my friend was living there and I flew for free it worked out well. The food was delicious and I’m really glad we took the side trip to the Cameron Highlands. I don’t think KL itself is destination-worthy, but it would be a great stopover for a day or two if you’re going somewhere else in SE Asia.
